New beginnings

So today was the first official day of school for two of my kids as well as for many of the offspring of my coworkers. For most it was all smiles and sharp pencils. Oh, but not for me. My first and second graders were nervous, but totally excited and not the problem. My preschooler was all about the drama. While her brother and sister were moving on to bigger and better things, she could not be consoled by the same old, same old of day camp. I was tearfully informed that there was nothing new for her there, no new friends, no new crafts, no new games and dread of all dreads, the same old naptime that had plagued her all summer. She did not go quietly, she was really sad and her spirit was crushed. And I applaud her. Of course not at first. At first I cried because obviously I am a horrible mother, or at least that's how you feel for the first hour after such an episode. But then I realized that I have a child who is not satisfied with the day in and day out. She wants something new and different, bigger and better like her siblings. She's over it. She wants to move forward. And so, on this first day of a new school year, my preschooler taught me to loathe the comfortable and embrace the next step, the next thing, the new stuff. Mmmm, like say blogging.
